BYU Launches “Office of Belonging” to “Eliminate Racism and Combat Prejudice”

PROVO, Utah (ABC4) – A new office has been established at Brigham Young University in Provo – the Membership Office. This follows an in-depth report by BYU’s Committee on Race, Fairness and Belonging in February.

President Kevin Worthen announced the new office, which will be headed by a vice president-level manager, saying it “will focus on helping campus members reach the home community described in a new statement on membership “. Primarily, the Membership Office will focus on “coordinating and improving on-campus membership services and efforts”.

“We determined that a necessary first step was to establish a framework within which – and by which – we would assess the various recommendations,” Worthen said. “The framework would not only provide guiding principles for evaluating recommendations and measuring our progress, but would also set out a vision for our end goal – what we hoped our university community would become. “

Worthen says the Membership Office will be at the heart of BYU’s “efforts to eradicate racism” and “fight” prejudices of all kinds, including those based on race, ethnicity, nationality, tribe. , gender, age, disability, socioeconomic status, religion belief and sexual orientation.
