New Gender and Sexuality Resource Center in Princeton to serve LGBTQIA + students


Princeton University’s Gender + Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) to launch this fall to serve women and LGBTQIA + students, and to offer gender and sexuality programming and extracurricular experiences for the university community.

Kristopher Oliveira (he / him) will lead the center as Deputy Dean for Diversity and Inclusion and Director of the GSRC. His appointment begins August 30.

The GSRC will rely on the historical legacy and impactful work of the Princeton’s Women * s Center and the LGBT Center, offering programs and services for indipeople and groups across campus.

With a focus on the after-school experience for students, the center will engage all members of the Princeton community through education, training and programming on gender and sexuality. Staff members will provide individual and group support to students and act as the resource and content expert for the campus.

“It’s an exciting time because what’s happening at Princeton is something that I don’t think is happening anywhere else – truly a strengthening of an after-school program that is in deep community and in partnership with the program. scholar of gender and sexuality studies, ”said Oliveira. . “My goal, and one of my hopes, is that we will be able to set a national standard for what these centers are capable of accomplishing.

Oliveira, who comes to Princeton from the University of Kansas where he was director of the Center for Sexuality and Gender Diversity, will report to LaTanya Buck, dean of diversity and inclusion in the office of the vice president for life on the campus.

Among the staff and faculty members of the search committee who recommended Oliveira for the role was Wallace Best, professor of religion and African American studies, who in 2020 was appointed director of the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program.

Oliveira is expected to complete her doctoral thesis. in Sociology from the University of South Florida in 2022. He holds an MA in Higher Education Administration from St. Cloud State University and a BS in Psychology from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.

The Women * s Center was founded in 1971 by some of Princeton’s first undergraduate women. Building on a legacy of activism and advocacy, the Women’s Center has remained committed over the years to inclusive and intersectional feminism, and in centering equity and racial justice, especially for people. to marginalized identities.

The Princeton LGBT Center dates back to 1989, when the offices of the Dean of Chapel and Dean of Student Life began hiring graduate students to help organize LGBT student activities. At the time, Princeton University was the sixth university in the country to create an LGBT coordinator position, which became a full-time professional position in 2001. The LGBT Center was officially launched in 2005.

The Rainbow Lounge and the Women’s Space will continue to operate separately in the new Frist Campus Center, allowing more personalized services and maintaining an affinity space.

Oliveira said the launch of the GSRC gives Princeton the opportunity to be mindful of the ways in which gender and sexuality are distinct, but also unique and often linked.

“We will maintain the integrity of the affinity spaces, the physical spaces that students come to,” Oliveira said. “We also have the opportunity to reflect on programming and this extracurricular model and the ways in which students engage with faculty and staff. I think this presents this really wonderful opportunity to start bringing together people and ideas that are often siled. “

Oliveira said the internships will likely be developed as part of the centre’s focus on the extracurricular experience.

“Our students come to these centers and find a home there, and often they get to the point where they say, ‘Wow, this could be my career,’” said Oliveira. “My hope is that this extracurricular model creates opportunities for students who learn all of these amazing theoretical ideas in the classroom. We can bring them to the space and the place, and put that work into practice, so that students think about community organizing, or they are looking for nonprofit experiences, or potentially even public policies that could shape and influence the social world. “

He added, “These are the people we engage with, and these are the people who have the power and the potential to transform our world. We can develop a program that honors that.

Along with the launch of the new center, the Dean’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion in Campus Life announced that Eric Anglero, former Program Coordinator of the LGBT Center, has been promoted to Deputy Director of the GSRC.

A program coordinator position in the new center focused on LGBTQIA + identities will fill the old role of Anglero. Grace Davis, who joined Princeton in October 2020 as Program Coordinator for the Women * s Center, has been appointed Coordinator of the GSRC Program Focused on Women and Female Identities.

To align structures within the Dean’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion in Campus Life and create a parallel model for the Carl A. Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding (CAF), a new Deputy Director position has been created. was created to intensify the efforts of the Fields Center and to expand support for students of color and racial equity initiatives. Victoria Yu, former CAF Program Coordinator, has been promoted to this position. An open program coordinator at CAF focused on mentoring and transitioning students to Princeton will replace Yu’s former position.

Tennille Haynes has been promoted to Vice-Dean for Diversity and Inclusion and remains Director of CAF, alongside the new Director of GSRC.

A search is underway to fill new GSRC and FAC Program Coordinator positions this fall. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the original Women * s Center and Fields Center.
