If you are a stranger things fan, then it’s entirely possible that you’re aware of some of the online chatter that has existed around Will Byers’ sexuality.

While speculation that Will is queer has been around since the start of the series (remember Mike saying“It’s not my fault you don’t like girls”?), it’s certainly amplified over the years – especially now, in season 4, where we see Will literally recoil when a girl tries to flirt with him.

in a new interview with TV Line, Matt and Ross Duffer — the Duffer Brothers — answered some of the fan theories. “You’re supposed to ask those questions,” Matt began.

“This is where it gets complicated, since we haven’t released the whole season yet,” he continued, assuring people that there will be clarity by the end of Season 4. “I just want people to watch the last two episodes.”

“We have story arcs and we have character arcs,” Ross said. “How we structured [the season], we released the first two acts of this story. The final act, which is the last two episodes, resolves a lot of things, both the character and the story, and then some of it sets up for our final season as well.

Meanwhile, Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, took a much looser approach in an interview with Variety earlier this week, saying“I feel like they never really talk about it or openly say how Will is doing. I think that’s the beauty of it, that it depends on the interpretation of the public — whether it’s Will who simply refuses to grow up and grows slower than his friends, or whether he’s actually gay.

Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, added: “Can I just say it’s 2022 and we don’t have to label things. I think what’s really good about the character of Will is is that he’s just a human being going through his own personal demons and issues. So many kids out there don’t know, and that’s OK. It’s OK not to know. And it’s OK to don’t label things.

That being said, when Finn Wolfhard was asked if Will’s feelings towards Mike, his character, became romantic, he replied, “Yeah. I think you slowly discover over the course of the season, the kind of love that Will has towards Mike, and I think that’s a very beautiful thing.”
